Why an apartment is usually the best choice in Meribel
The Meribel valley grew around tourist residences and chalets divided into apartments. As a result this is the most abundant format, the most varied and by far the most flexible on budget. You will find everything from a cabin studio for four to a four bedroom duplex, in almost every neighbourhood of the resort.
An apartment gives you what actually makes a good ski week: a kitchen so you are not eating out seven nights running, real storage for equipment, and the freedom to live at your own pace. Across a week for four, the cost gap against an equivalent hotel arrangement runs well over a thousand euros.
Budget flexibility
This is the first argument. On identical dates, the gap between the simplest studio and the most polished duplex can be fivefold. That range lets you tune the stay precisely to the budget without giving up on location.
Many of our guests actually prefer to sacrifice a few square metres to gain on position, and over a ski week that is almost always the right trade.
The kitchen, which changes everything
On a ski holiday, breakfast and dinner at home mean substantial savings and real convenience with children. An equipped kitchen with an oven, a dishwasher and decent hobs covers the whole week.
We check the state of the kitchen equipment systematically, because that is where older residences most often disappoint.
The different areas for renting an apartment in Meribel
The valley stretches over fifteen kilometres and nearly seven hundred metres of vertical. The area you choose determines your access to the slopes, your budget and the mood of your evenings. It is worth five minutes of thought before you start looking at photos.
Here is how we usually advise deciding, depending on the profile of the stay.
Meribel Centre, for resort life
The Chaudanne area and its surroundings concentrate the shops, restaurants, the Olympic Park and the departure of the main lifts. This is the sector to choose if you want to go out on foot in the evening with everything close at hand.

Meribel Mottaret, for the skiing
Three hundred metres higher, Mottaret opens earlier, closes later and sits at the geographic centre of the 3 Valleys. Residences there often open straight onto the pistes.

Meribel Village and Morel, for quiet
Away from the main axis, these areas offer a more village like atmosphere and gentler rates. Each has its own lift, which avoids having to reach the Chaudanne in the morning.
It is an excellent compromise for a quiet family stay, provided you accept a few minutes of shuttle to reach the main shops.
Les Allues and the lower hamlets
At 1,100 metres, Les Allues and the neighbouring hamlets offer the most affordable rates in the valley, with access to the ski area via the Olympe gondola. The authenticity is real, the snow cover in the village less guaranteed.
This works well for late season stays and tighter budgets, and for travellers who also come for the heritage and the hiking.
Choosing the right size for your party
The advertised floor area matters less than the layout. A well designed thirty square metres with an enclosed sleeping alcove and ski storage lives better than a badly divided forty where everyone sleeps in the same room.
Here are the benchmarks we use to advise guests, bearing in mind that a ski week generates far more kit than a summer week.
Studio and cabin studio, two to four people
The cabin studio adds an enclosed sleeping space, usually with bunk beds. It is the most economical option for a couple with two children, provided you accept a compact living area.
We advise against a plain studio for more than two people over a full week, mainly because drying equipment quickly becomes a problem.
One and two bedroom apartments, four to six people
This is the best balanced format in the stock. A double bedroom, a children's room or a cabin, a living room with a sofa bed, a bathroom and often a separate toilet.
For six people, always check there is a second shower room or at minimum an independent toilet. That is the detail that makes mornings work.
Duplexes and large apartments, eight people and up
Duplexes give a natural separation between living level and sleeping level. For eight people and above they often make a credible alternative to a chalet, at a lower budget.
At that capacity, insist on two bathrooms and a dishwasher. Our selection of chalets remains better suited beyond ten people.
Ski in ski out apartments: how to check
The phrase is heavily overused across the valley. An apartment can be advertised as ski in ski out while actually requiring five minutes of uphill walking on the way back, in ski boots with skis on your shoulder.
We prefer to give the real distance and the type of access. These are the three situations you will meet.
Direct access from the residence
The best case: a door or ski locker opening onto the piste or a few metres from it. You click in outside and ski back. In Meribel this mainly applies to Mottaret residences and a few buildings at the Rond Point des Pistes.
It is the only case where you can genuinely come back for lunch without thinking twice.
Access by gondola or shuttle
Very common and perfectly comfortable. A free gondola or shuttle takes over, with high frequency in season. The journey adds five to ten minutes, with no effort.
This type of access often lets you get a larger or better positioned apartment for the same budget.
What an apartment week in Meribel costs
As everywhere in the Alps, dates explain most of the price. The same apartment can vary threefold between a January week and New Year.
We quote by week during school holidays and offer shorter stays for the rest of the season.
Expensive weeks and quiet weeks
Christmas, New Year and the February holidays concentrate demand. January outside holidays, early December and the second half of April offer the best rates.
Snow quality in January is often better than in February, with three times fewer people on the pistes. It is the valley's best kept secret.
Exactly what is included
Bed linen, towels, the end of stay clean and an on site welcome are included in our rates. Tourist tax, lift passes and equipment hire are extra.
We also offer grocery delivery before arrival, mid stay cleaning and transfers, with no additional commission.
Renting an apartment as a family
The Meribel valley is particularly well organised for families, with beginner zones at the centre of each area rather than on the edge, and a free, frequent shuttle network.
Choosing the apartment should then rest on very concrete criteria rather than on how the photos look.
The five things to check
A washing machine, real ski storage, a bath or a shower a small child can use, a separate sleeping area, and the real distance to the ski school meeting point. Those five points determine how smoothly the week runs.
We supply a travel cot and high chair when the property does not have them, on request at booking.
Proximity to ski lessons
ESF meeting points are at the Chaudanne, the Mottaret snow front, Meribel Village and Morel. Staying within five minutes of one of them makes mornings considerably simpler.
For stays with children aged three to six, we advise prioritising this over floor area.
Booking at the right time
The apartment stock is wider than the chalet stock, so pressure is lower. That said, the best properties, the ones combining position and quality, go early.
These are the patterns we observe season after season.
Lead times by period
Six to ten months for the February and Christmas holidays. Three to six months for January and March. One to three months for April and for short stays outside holidays.
Cancellations regularly free up properties, including in high season. It costs nothing to ask us even late.
Short stays and weekends
Outside French and British school holidays we accept stays of three to five nights on part of the portfolio. It is a very attractive option early and late in the season.
These availabilities often open late, once the shape of the week becomes clear.
Apartment or chalet: how to decide
The apartment wins up to six people, on a controlled budget, and for a stay focused on skiing. It offers the best balance of cost, position and comfort.
The chalet becomes relevant beyond that, when several families travel together or when shared evenings matter as much as the slopes. Our chalet rental page covers that format.
Working it out per person
Always compare price per person per night rather than the headline price. A chalet can look expensive and turn out equivalent to two apartments once divided.
Then add the value of the shared spaces, sauna and large dining table, which almost never exist in an apartment.
Renting an apartment outside the ski season
The valley does not only live in winter. From June to September, Meribel becomes a hiking and mountain biking base at the foot of the Vanoise national park, with accommodation rates that bear no comparison to high season.
Apartments are widely available then, often at less than half the winter price, and the valley returns to the rhythm of a mountain village.
Summer, hiking and mountain lakes
Trails start directly from the neighbourhoods, with no intermediate transport, and two lifts run to give access to the ridges. Lac de Tueda and the nature reserve are the most popular starting point.

Shoulder seasons and remote working
In May, June and October the resort is very quiet and part of the shops close. It is, however, an excellent period for an extended remote working stay, with very accessible monthly rates.

Do you need a car in Meribel?

If you do drive, check that your apartment comes with a parking space, because public parking is limited in high season.
Is linen provided?
Yes, bed linen and towels are included, along with the end of stay clean. Table linen and tea towels are also supplied.
A mid week change is available on request for a supplement.
Can you bring a pet?
Some apartments allow it, others do not, depending on the owner and the building rules. Mention it with your first enquiry so we filter correctly.
An additional cleaning charge applies at the end of the stay where an animal is accepted.
What are the arrival and departure times?
Arrival is generally from 5pm and departure before 10am, which leaves time for cleaning between stays. Adjustments are possible depending on the schedule.
If you arrive late in the evening, tell us: we arrange a suitable key handover, including after 10pm.
Is there a ski locker in the residences?
The great majority of residences have a locked ski room, sometimes heated, with an allocated locker. We state for each apartment whether it is individual or shared.
Heated lockers with boot dryers exist in recent residences and make a real difference with children.
