Where is Mussillon?

The hamlet stretches along the road climbing up from Les Allues, immediately below Méribel Centre. By car or shuttle you are in the heart of the resort in 2-3 minutes, in Méribel-Mottaret in a quarter of an hour and at Moûtiers TGV station in twenty minutes. Being at the entrance to the resort also pays off on changeover day: you skip the drive through the centre and its queues.

Long before the ski lifts, Mussillon lived to the rhythm of herds and haymaking, like Le Raffort, Chandon and Le Villard. Several traditional farmhouses remain from that era, gradually converted into charming chalets, along with a neighbourly spirit that has disappeared elsewhere. When Méribel developed from 1938 onwards, the mandatory architecture - wood, stone, pitched roofs - naturally absorbed Mussillon into the resort landscape without ever spoiling it. From La Chaudanne, Méribel's main lift hub, you have direct access to the valley's 150 km of pistes and the 600 km of the 3 Valleys. 8.45am: fresh bread from the centre, a ten-minute walk, and you are clicking in at La Chaudanne before the crowds. Morning on Tougnète, lunch on a mountain terrace, afternoon towards La Saulire or a hop to Courchevel. 4.30pm: last run down the homeward boulevards, mulled wine at La Chaudanne, then a ten-minute digestive stroll back to the chalet. The children move on to sledging and hot chocolate, the raclette starts to melt - and tomorrow you do it again, perhaps on the Val Thorens side.

Which lift pass should you choose?

The Méribel Valley pass (150 km) is plenty for families and leisure skiers: Altiport, Tougnète, La Saulire and the runs home are all covered. Mileage hunters will want the 3 Valleys pass (600 km) for day trips to Courchevel, Val Thorens or Les Menuires. Getting to Mussillon

By train: TGV and winter Eurostar services to Moûtiers (a 20-minute drive), then transfer or shuttle. By air: Chambéry is 1h30 away, Geneva and Lyon around 2h15, with private or shared transfers to the chalet. By car: the A430 motorway to Moûtiers, then straight up the valley road - Mussillon comes before the centre, which is handy on busy Saturdays. Winter equipment is mandatory on the roads from November to March.
