Méribel rentals for 8 people | Two families under one roof

Eight people almost always means two families travelling together. And a stay with two families is not decided by the floor area of the property but by how it is laid out: how many genuinely separate bedrooms, how many bathrooms, and a living room big enough to hold everyone in the evening.

We have seven properties that sleep eight or more. That is not many, and it is normal: at this size the supply thins out everywhere in the valley. It is also why they go first.

The real issue: how the bedrooms are divided

Two families of four do not use a property the way a group of eight adults does. You need two main bedrooms, or failing that two rooms of equal quality, otherwise the question of who sleeps where settles in on the first evening and never quite goes away.

This is what we advise on most. We know the exact layout of each property, which bedroom faces the road, which one has the real double bed, which one has no usable window. These are details you cannot see in photos and that decide how a week goes.

Two bathrooms, the minimum

At eight, a single bathroom is not a minor inconvenience, it is a daily organisational problem. In the morning before ski lessons and in the evening on the way back, eight people cannot share one shower without somebody waiting thirty minutes.

So we favour properties with two bathrooms for these stays, and we always say so. When an address only has one, we tell you before you book, not after.

Splitting the cost without second thoughts

A stay with two families has one particular feature: it is paid for by two households. An all-inclusive price, with no cleaning supplement or linen charge added on arrival, makes splitting it far simpler — and avoids awkward conversations when it comes to settling up.

With us, bed linen is made up before you arrive and the end-of-stay clean is included in the price shown. There is no platform commission either: for the same service, the gap can reach twenty per cent.

What sharing between eight actually means

Per person, a large property that is properly filled often works out cheaper than a studio used by two. It is one of the rare cases where trading up brings the individual cost down.

Add to that the meals eaten in the property, which become far more economical at eight than at two, provided the kitchen is sized for it. That is a criterion we check as carefully as the number of beds.

Our properties for eight in the valley

Le Laitelet, in Méribel-Mottaret, is home to several of our large apartments, including ski-in ski-out properties for eight to nine people. It is the highest area and the one most directly connected to the ski area.

Our chalets round out the offer, in Chandon, La Renarde and Mussillon. They bring complete independence and more shared space, which counts when two families are under the same roof.

Apartment or chalet for eight

The apartment remains cheaper and benefits from the residence services: ski locker, lift, often parking. In return it comes with neighbours, which is not nothing when children come back noisily from the slopes.

The chalet removes that constraint and generally offers more shared volume. For two families who plan to spend their evenings together, it is often the option that changes the stay.

Skiing as eight without losing each other

A group of eight never skis entirely together. Abilities differ, the children have lessons in the morning, some want to come back earlier. Staying ski-in ski-out resolves most of that friction: everyone comes back when they want, without depending on anyone else.

That is particularly true when children have ESF lessons in the morning. Parents can ski on their own and gather everyone back at the property without arranging a complicated meeting point in the middle of the ski area.

Two cars, two arrivals

Eight people almost always means two vehicles, and often two arrivals at different times. Parking then becomes a genuine issue, especially in February.

Our properties with parking included settle part of the problem. Tell us how many cars you will have: at some residences a second space is possible, at others it is not, and it is better to know before you set off.

Staggered arrivals

It is common for one family to arrive on the Saturday and the other on the Sunday. We arrange the key handover accordingly, without the first family having to wait for the second or the other way round.

Just let us know when you book. It is the kind of detail a local management team settles in two minutes and a remote service turns into an ordeal.

What we prepare before you arrive

Lift passes, ski lessons and equipment can be booked in advance for the whole group. At eight, several of them children, kitting everyone out on day one can take up an entire morning if nothing has been prepared.

Send us the ages, the abilities and the boot sizes, and we will take care of the rest. You arrive, you drop the bags, and the first day is for skiing.

When to book a property for eight

This is the category where booking ahead matters most. Properties for eight are scarce across the whole valley, and school holiday weeks fill up a long way in advance.

If your dates are fixed, get in touch early. If they are flexible, tell us: we can point you towards the weeks when these properties are still available, which a search calendar does not always show.

A typical day with two families

In the morning the children go off to lessons and the adults ski on their own; at lunchtime part of the group comes back to eat and the rest stay up on the mountain; in the evening everyone meets again. That pattern repeats all week and it only works if the property is well placed.

It is also why the kitchen and the living room matter more than the bedrooms at this size. Bedrooms are for sleeping; the rest of the group's life happens in the shared rooms, and that is where comfort is measured.

Storage, the blind spot of large stays

Eight people skiing produce a quantity of wet kit that nobody anticipates properly: salopettes, gloves, base layers, socks. Without drying space, the property quickly becomes uncomfortable.

We always check for a ski locker and usable drying space. It is a criterion you cannot see in photos and it becomes decisive from six or eight people upwards.

Winter stay, summer stay

Large properties are mostly booked in winter, but they lend themselves very well to summer. Walking, mountain biking, Lac de Tuéda: the programme changes, the group dynamic stays the same, and the rates are far gentler.

For two families who want to travel together without the budget of a ski week, it is an option worth putting on the table. Ask us about summer availability, it is much better.

Common questions about rentals for eight

Can we be nine? Some of our properties go beyond eight. Give us the exact number from the outset, as the selection is not the same.

Are the bedrooms equivalent? Rarely, in any property. We describe the layout precisely before you book, so that the two families can decide between themselves with the facts in front of them.

Is there enough storage for eight? That is a point we check on site. Eight people skiing produce a considerable amount of wet kit, and a ski locker is essential.

What we check before suggesting an address

For a stay of eight, we do not just count the beds. We look at the real distance between the property and the first lift, whether there is a lift in the building when there are floors to climb, the capacity of the dishwasher, and the space available in the entrance to get eight people kitted out at once.

These checks are done on the ground, several times a season. That is what allows us to tell you, before you book, whether an address genuinely suits two families or whether it will only suit a more flexible group.
