Apartment rental in Meribel Mottaret

Why rent an apartment in Meribel Mottaret

Mottaret is the part of the valley where the ratio between apartment price and quality of piste access is most favourable. The reason is structural: the resort was designed in the nineteen seventies as an integrated station, with residences placed directly beside the pistes rather than linked by road.

In practice, an apartment in Mottaret puts you a few dozen metres from a lift, in a pedestrian resort, at 1,750 metres. That is why regular skiers come back every year when they could stay lower down for less.

Altitude and season length

At 1,750 metres on the snow front, Mottaret is the highest point of the Meribel valley. The resort usually opens before the lower villages and holds snow longer into spring, particularly on the Mont Vallon sector.

On a booking made six months ahead, that altitude is real insurance. Regulars know it well, which explains the pressure on December and April availability.

A resort you live without a car

Mottaret is almost entirely pedestrian. Once the car is parked it stays parked all week: shops, ski schools, equipment hire and lifts are all reachable on foot or by free gondola.

For a family that changes the nature of the stay. Children move between the apartment and the snow front on their own without crossing a road, which is far from true everywhere in the 3 Valleys.

The residences of Meribel Mottaret area by area

Mottaret does not read as a linear resort but as three terraced groups on either side of the Doron. Each has its own access logic, its own sunshine and its own price range, and the difference in comfort between two neighbouring residences can be significant.

Here is how we usually steer guests according to the profile of their stay.

Le Laitelet, the largest residential sector

Le Laitelet occupies the right bank and holds most of the resort's apartments. The residences are mostly set along the pistes coming down from the Plattieres, which gives many of them a direct ski back to the door.

It is the sector offering the best balance of price, space and piste access. Our page on Le Laitelet details the residences and their exact positions.

Le Hameau, the upper part of Le Laitelet

Le Hameau is the upper portion of the area, the most recent and the best insulated. Apartments there are generally more comfortable, with better thermal performance and balconies facing down the valley.

A free gondola links Le Hameau to the snow front all day and part of the evening. It is the most requested sector in Mottaret among families, and the one that books earliest.

Le Chatelet, the sunny side

On the left bank, Le Chatelet catches the sun from morning until late afternoon and offers open views towards the Mont Vallon. The atmosphere is quieter and slightly more residential.

A footbridge links the area to the centre in a few minutes on foot. It is the right choice for a quiet stay without genuinely moving away from the shops.

The snow front and the resort centre

Staying at snow front level means the lift ticket offices, ski schools, equipment hire and shops are under two minutes away. The residences there are older but unbeatable on convenience.

In exchange, sunshine hours are shorter in December and January, and returning skiers create some activity in late afternoon.

Ski in ski out apartments in Mottaret: the reality

In Mottaret almost every listing claims ski in ski out. In practice there are real differences, and they are measured in minutes of walking in ski boots, which matters at the end of the day.

For each apartment we state the distance in metres, the gradient and the type of return, rather than a marketing phrase.

Direct access from the residence

Some residences have an exit or ski room opening straight onto the piste. You click in outside in the morning and ski back in the evening without carrying equipment. That is maximum comfort.

This mainly applies to residences along the Plattieres pistes and the Chatelet return run. They are also the properties that go first.

Access by the free gondola

For Le Hameau and part of the upper Laitelet, the free gondola acts as a lift. It runs continuously and removes any uphill walking entirely.

This configuration is very comfortable and often lets you secure a larger or more recent apartment for the same budget as a piste side property.

Which size to choose for your party

Mottaret's stock is dominated by mid sized units, inherited from the nineteen seventies design: many cabin studios and one bedroom apartments, with a few more recent duplexes.

Layout matters more than advertised floor area, particularly for storing ski equipment, which is the weak point of properties from that era.

Studio and cabin studio, two to four people

The cabin studio adds an enclosed sleeping space with bunk beds, which makes it viable for a couple with two children. It is the most economical option in the resort.

Check there is an allocated ski locker, because internal storage is limited in this type of property. It is a point we verify systematically.

One and two bedroom apartments, four to six people

The most common and best balanced format. A double bedroom, a cabin or a second bedroom, a living room with a sofa bed and a bathroom.

For six people, a separate toilet or a second shower room genuinely changes morning comfort. We state it in every description.

Duplexes and larger apartments

Duplexes naturally separate the living level from the sleeping level and work well for eight or ten people. They make a credible alternative to a chalet at a lower budget.

Beyond ten people, our selection of chalets remains better suited, mainly for the number of bathrooms.

The ski area from your apartment

Mottaret sits at the geographic centre of the 3 Valleys. From the snow front three directions open immediately, with no shuttle and no second lift. That is the resort's real competitive advantage.

Across a week, the time saved compared with staying at the bottom of the valley translates into hours of extra skiing.

Mont Vallon and the local sector

The Mont Vallon gondola climbs to 2,952 metres and serves two long red runs of more than a thousand metres of vertical. It is the best snow holding sector in the valley, often skiable until closing.

From most Mottaret apartments it is reached with a single lift. Few resorts offer such direct access to a summit of that quality.

Links to the other valleys

The Pas du Lac gondola reaches La Saulire and crosses into Courchevel. The Plattieres open the Belleville valley towards Les Menuires and Val Thorens. You can ski a different valley every day without touching the car.

Our ski area page details the routes and connection times sector by sector.

Budget and periods of the season

The price of an apartment in Mottaret depends first on dates, then on capacity and finally on position relative to the pistes. The gap between a January week and New Year commonly runs threefold.

We quote by week during school holidays and accept shorter stays for the rest of the season.

The best value weeks

January outside school holidays remains the best window of the year: fresh snow, empty pistes and low rates. Early December and the second half of April also offer very good value.

Given Mottaret's altitude, snow cover in those periods is usually equivalent to the February holidays.

What our rates include

Bed linen, towels, the end of stay clean and an on site welcome are included. Tourist tax, lift passes and equipment hire are separate.

We offer grocery delivery before arrival, mid stay cleaning and transfers from stations and airports as options.

Renting as a family in Mottaret

Mottaret is probably the most family friendly resort in the valley, for a simple geographic reason: the beginner areas are at the centre of the resort, not on the edge, and there are no roads to cross.

Choosing the apartment should then rest on practical criteria rather than on how the photos look.

The features to check

Washing machine, allocated ski locker, accessible bath or shower, enclosed sleeping area and the real distance to the ski school meeting point. Those five points determine how smoothly the week runs.

We supply a travel cot and high chair when the apartment does not have them, on request at booking.

Proximity to ski schools and clubs

The ESF meeting points and children's clubs are at snow front level. From Le Laitelet or Le Hameau the journey takes a few minutes by piste or gondola.

For a first stay with children aged three to six, we recommend prioritising this over floor area.

Getting to Mottaret and parking

Mottaret is the end of the valley road, roughly 18 kilometres from Moutiers. Access uses the same road as Meribel Centre, extended by a few kilometres.

Our getting to Meribel page details journeys from stations, airports and major cities, with realistic times on Saturday transfer days.

Staying without a car

It is perfectly possible and often more pleasant. Transfers from Moutiers, Chambery, Lyon and Geneva can be booked in advance, and the resort is fully walkable or reachable by gondola.

Free shuttles also link Mottaret to Meribel Centre several times an hour in season, into the evening.

Car parks and parking

Check that your apartment comes with a space, because surface parking is limited and regulated in high season. Covered car parks exist and can be booked ahead.

Once parked, the car stays unused all week. That is one of the resort's main advantages.

Frequently asked questions about apartment rental in Meribel Mottaret

These are the questions that come up most often before a Mottaret booking. If yours is not here, write to us and we will reply quickly.

They run from the most general to the most specific, and we update them every season based on what our guests actually ask us most often before booking.

What altitude is Meribel Mottaret?

The snow front sits at 1,750 metres and the upper neighbourhoods reach roughly 1,800 metres. It is the highest point of the Meribel valley.

The local summit, the Mont Vallon, tops out at 2,952 metres, and the 3 Valleys reach 3,230 metres at the Cime Caron.

Is Le Hameau worth the price premium?

For a family, generally yes. Apartments there are more recent, better insulated, and the free gondola removes all uphill walking. It is also quieter.

For a couple going out in the evening, the snow front or the centre remains more practical and cheaper.

How far in advance should you book?

Six to ten months for the February and Christmas holidays, three to six months for January and March, one to three months for April. Larger capacities go earlier.

Cancellations regularly free up properties, including in high season. We can alert you as soon as availability matches your criteria.

Can you rent for a weekend in Mottaret?

Yes, outside French and British school holidays. During those periods the minimum stay is seven nights across almost the entire portfolio.

Early and late season weekends often deliver the best value of the year.

Do the residences have ski lockers?

Almost all of them, with an allocated locker. Recent residences offer heated lockers with boot dryers, which makes a real difference with children.

We state for each apartment whether it is an individual locker or a shared ski room.
